Eight Count Auditions 2009, Part II

Eight Count is holding second set of auditions! There are several reasons why you would want to be there for this:
  1. You somehow missed it the first time around and want to give it a shot.
  2. You want to come out and just learn some choreo and hang out with us.
  3. You are already on that team and you have to come.
If one or more apply you are very very welcome. We look forward to seeing old faces and new!

Summer Workshop Series - Tuesday, August 18, 2009

Hey y'all, last chance to soak up the Eight Count summer workshop series goodness. You don't have to wait an extra week, and because we want you there so badly we are making it FREE. Come check us out, especially if you are interested in trying out the following Sunday, August 23. This week we have two seasoned Eight Count choreographers and leaders: Grace Yu and Joseph Cheng!

Choreographer bios:

Grace studied at UCSD, where she danced with 220 Second to None in its founding year and helped launch the Fushion Hip Hop Dance Competition. In 2005, she joined Eight Count. She has contributed greatly to the ministry as a choreographer and a leader. Her style is sharp, strong, and fun and her warm ups are unforgettable. Don't miss it!
Joseph developed his skills as a dancer at MIT and danced with MIT's first hip hop dance crew, MIT Ridonkulous. He has been choreographing and dancing with Eight Count for two years and is now the director of the team. He is passionate about dancing and focuses on precision movements.

Choreographer bios:

As a San Jose native, Janette danced on Future Shock San Jose for eight years. She is trained in several styles including jazz, hip-hop, salsa and Mexican folkloric. Being a member of Eight Count she loves learning different styles of dance, being able to share her faith, building community and using hip hop to express herself. She is rarely found without a smile, and her fun and energetic style is infectious and very beginner friendly.
He felt the call of the Lord to start dancing after a Christian conference in Redding, CA. He began taking different dance classes like hip-hop, salsa, ballroom, and tap at San Jose State and plans to minor in dance. His main style is hip-hop. Besides dancing, DJ is passionate about Jesus - sharing His love through dance and picking up his cross daily. In the future, DJ plans to start a dance ministry of his own.

Summer Workshop Series Special: Part 3, Fo' Free!

Guest choreographer bios:

Mike is an Eight Count alumus who is a self taught freestyler at heart, and often dances to therapeutically ease his soul. He has danced with and choreographed for 4 different dance ministries for the past 5 years. He loves to play with the musicality of a song and arrange his freestyle into a choreographed piece. He has experience teaching youths to adults, and creates a no pressure environment, where all students can pick up his style and groove.
Martin has danced all over the country, training with groups like Culture Shock Oakland, Dance 2XS, Phunk Phenomenon, and Funktion. In 2005, he joined Eight Count. As the director, he was active in the formation and progression of the ministry for the last 4 years. He is happy to have left Eight Count, only because his ministry is now his beautiful baby girl Alaya. We are glad to have him back for this workshop session! Be prepared for an energetic teacher with a sharp style filled with character.

Summer Workshop - Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Continuing the series, we have two of our very own choreographers, Sharon Huang and Kathleen Kang, teaching next Tuesday, June 30.

Choreographer bios:

Sharon began dancing with the competing hip hop team 909 while attending UC Riverside. After moving back home in NorCal, Sharon joined Eight Count, and has been with the group for 4 faithful years. She is currently on the leadership team, and is an essential choreographer and member of the ministry. Sharon has a sharp and fun style, one that is friendly to dancers of all levels.
Kathleen began dancing and training with Team Technique, a competing hip hop group affiliated with Rutgers University (NJ) almost five years ago. After her first year she became artistic director of the team until 2008, when she relocated to the Bay Area for graduate school. She is currently dancing and choreographing for Eight Count. Kathleen teaches groovy and energetic choreography with an emphasis on musicality. Don't forget to bring your swag.

Summer Workshops!

We are going to host a series of workshops in the summer - starting on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 7:00PM. Our very own Eight Count choreographers will be teaching. Later in the series, we hope to bring out special guest choreographers.

Workshop info:

  • 7:00 PM - Intermediate Hip Hop by Joseph Cheng.
  • 8:00 PM - Breakdance by Newton Cheng.
  • 9:00 PM - Freestyle session.
  • Cost: $7 for one class, $12 for two.

Choreographer bios:

Joseph developed his skills as a dancer at MIT and danced with MIT's first hip hop dance crew, MIT Ridonkulous. He has been choreographing and dancing with Eight Count for two years and is now the director of the team. He is passionate about dancing and focuses on precision movements.
Newton has been breakdancing since 2001 and has spent the last four years teaching classes at Dance Attack Studios in Los Gatos, CA. He specializes in working with beginners so there is no previous dance experience necessary to attend this workshop.

If our Eight Count workshops are not enough dancing for you, Eight Count alum, Nami, will be hosting a workshop series for the next two weeks. Eight Count choreographer, Kathleen Kang, will be a guest teacher.

OneStep09: Thank You!

Thanks to everyone for making our first hip hop showcase a successful event! All the dance groups were amazing: A1 Crew, Bliss Dance Co, DS Players, Elementral Remix, Future Shock San Jose, Imani's Dream, In Rhythm With Him, IXALT, Junior FUSION, Represent and Skamatix. Paul Kim and Jon Talbert were a huge blessing to have. TR!BE and DJ Trust threw out amazing beats giving us some great freestyle sessions. Ozzy gave us amazing graffiti art as back drops. All the community organizations, esp City Teams, gave us excellent opportunites to take the next steps in serving our communities. If you weren't there, you definitely missed out.

CANCELLED: Eight Count Poker Tournament

Thank you for signing up and supporting our team; however, due to the lack of participants, Eight Count Poker night will be canceled. Our goal was to obtain a certain amount of players so we could give out the prizes and still be able to fund raise a certain amount for our trip. We thank you again for your participation.

Eight Count Poker Tournament

We have been presented with a tremendous opportunity to serve overseas in one of Hawaii's largest Christian conferences. We will be traveling to Honolulu, HI and looking forward to sharing the gift of art, as well as all that God has taught us through our experiences in this ministry. All proceeds from this event will contribute to this outreach event.
